designer iPad

Maybe if I hadn't gone on the hunt for a case when I first got my iPad I'd think the idea of spending $69.95 on a designer case was stupid, but the truth is I came across plenty of yuck cases in the $50-60 range. I wound up going with a black Incase Protective Cover ($39.95), because, well, the iPad just seems delicate, and let's face it, I'm a klutz. I chose it because it's all rubbery and I thought it might give my poor iPad a chance when I inevitably dropped it. Which, surprisingly, I haven't yet (jinx!)

In any case, the problem I have with it is the stand, which I wanted/needed about as much as I wanted to protect the damn thing. I use the iPad in the kitchen probably more than anywhere else, and it's just easier to see a recipe when it's standing up. And depending on the recipe/app, sometimes it needs to be in landscape, and other times portrait. Unfortunately, this stand sorta sucks. I mean, it holds the iPad up, but twice now it's popped right out and, well, I guess that's just one more reason I need the case.

So, all that to say, I would be up for a new case if I could find one that was, you know, useful. In that sense, money isn't really an issue, unless the money is, you know, stupid. The $395 Stella McCartney case, while pretty, is not useful, unless by useful you mean: not. So while this dude is looking for a "cooler" case, I'd like one that's more functional. Because ultimately, I use my iPad as a tool and not a toy. Or a fashion statement.

For that, I have shoes.

English Peas by Paula Dean

tags: wtf?
I admit, I haven't watched Food Network in years, but if this is their idea of a recipe, I can see I'm not missing anything. Or, everything, depending on your perspective. Did they get bought by Comedy Central?

You know what really makes this recipe awesome? The comments:

This was outstanding! I did make a couple modifications. I eliminated the butter, and in place of the peas I substituted one can of Chef Boyardee spaghetti and meatballs.

Roll your own

I really got into making my own pasta a couple years ago, and I think the only reason I haven't done it in a while (except for that whole pierogi thing) is because my current kitchen is not exactly user friendly. In any case, homemade pasta is an extra special kind of awesome and I highly recommend you give it a try if you haven't already. I have a super easy egg pasta recipe I'd be happy to share with you if it weren't for the fact that it's shoved in a box somewhere in a house in Tempe I'm not moved into yet. So, I promise, when I dig it out, I'll post it. I know, I know, I'm such a recipe tease.

However, all is not lost. I found this Mark Bittman article / video at the NYT today that does a great job of talking you through the process. I don't recall using quite as many eggs, and I mix my dough in a Kitchen Aid mixer rather than a food processor, but beyond that my recipe/process is just about the same. Even for the pesto! Recipe here.

The Devil Rulz! (duh)

tags: lolz

If Devils Rule had been an option, I might have lobbied for Catholic school. Yes, I realize they mean Sun Devils, as in ASU, but the license plate frame is just awesome.

Movin' right along...

Moving has begun! This is my view from the kitchen. Not bad, though it'll be much nicer once we clean all the crap out of the pool. Our new, not entirely sucktastic management company cleaned it before we moved in, but between lease signing and box moving, Mother Nature hit us with two days of insane wind.

That's a giant aloe farm there in the corner which will certainly come in handy given my exceptional talent at burning the crap out of myself. Also, aloe flowers? Who knew? Mixed in with it is, I think, oregano. At least it smells like oregano. But it looks like it's overwintered a couple few times because it's pretty woody. I also have a grapefruit tree, a kumquat tree (at least I think they are kumquats - if not they are very sad little oranges) and what might be a fig tree! If it's not a fig tree, then it's a poop tree, as that's what the few remaining dead fig-ish things look like right now. Here's to hoping they're figs. Oh, and a date palm. When exactly these trees flower and produce fruit I have no idea, but you'll be the first (ok, second) to know, and anything that can be squished into jam, will be.

So, we've got all month to complete this move, and boy are we going to need it because, holy wow batman do we have a lot of stuff. That whole your stuff owns you line from Fight Club comes to mind right about now...

Happy New Year!

Last night we had our two BFF couples over, opened a few bottles of wine, and nommed about 10 different kinds of cheese. My Favorite? Drunken Goat (that would be the cheese, not me). You have no idea how happy I am that I'm not lactose intolerant. Or vegan.

In any case, it was a great way to ring in the new year, and here I am on 1/1/11 (I'm sure there's some numerological significance there that at one time may have been profoundly Pythagorean but has since been bastardized by some new age, moon howling bullshit) without a hangover OR tummy ache. I WIN.

And then I found what is quite possibly the best food hack evar (zinger tiramisu), and in the process I learned the word abomilicious, which perfectly describes it. OMG, thank you reddit. No, I will not make this, but I will admire it's abomiliciousness. From afar.
